Clevaland, OH - The RCTC Yellowjackets and Nassau Lions played an early season thriller on Saturday. The Jackets lead 14-0 at the half before coming from behind to win 30-27 in double-overtime.
The Jackets got out of the gate early scoring twice in the first quarter to lead 14-0. Neither team could muster much offense in the second as the two defenses combined for a second period shut-out. Nassau flipped the script in the second half, outscoring the jackets 17-3 to force overtime. The Jackets kicked the game-tying field goal with just 19 seconds remaining. In the first-overtime both teams scored touchdowns as Nassau scored first and the Jackets answered. In the second overtime period, the jacket defense held the Lions to a field goal and then scored on a 25 yard pass on the first play of their possession to seal the win.
Devin Gonzalez was 14-21 for 181 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Desmond Washington was 9-18 for 66 yards. Jayden Homuth lead all receivers with 6 catches for 57 yards and a score, while Cole Thompson picked up 4 catches for 43 yards. Marcaveus Washington had 3 catches for 32 yards out of the backfield along with a rushing touchdown.
Chase Karpowich was 4-4 on kicks including the clutch 32 yard kick to send the game to overtime and 3 extra points.
Defensively the Jackets were lead by Trenton Bronaugh and Coaleon Johnson each of who had interceptions. Noah Courington lead the team in tackles with 8, including 4 tackles for loss. Bronaugh, and Jeremiah Swain each had 6 tackles, while Noah Washingotn, Daniel Graham, and Lance Kellum each had 4.
RCTC kicks off conference play on Thursday night, September 4th with a home game against MN-North Vermilion. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 pm at the Rochester Regional Stadium.
