Rochester, MN - The RCTC Yellowjackets football team came to play on Saturday afternoon. The Jackets offense put up 46 points in downing the Ironmen of Vermillion Community College 46-24. The Yellowjackets pounded out 437 yards of total offense including 338 total yards rushing on the day.
The Jackets (1-4) were led on the ground by running backs Cazz Martin and Ben Thompson. Martin racked up 184 yards rushing on 15 carries with a touchdown, while Thompson ran for 130 yards and 3 scores. Thompson added 2 catches for 19 yards while Martin had 4 catches for 12 yards to add to his total.
Quarterbacks Shane Fleury and Michael Schimming combined for 99 yards passing, including a 40 yard touchdown from Fleury to Markees Phillips. Juan Martinez connected on 2 of 3 field golas as well as 4 of 6 extra points. Punters Dylan Dumarce and Spencer Mandt had a light day of work each only punting one time on the afternoon.
On the defenseive side of the ball, the Yellowjackets picked off the Ironmen 4 times on the game and forced 3 fumbles. ANthony Harper, Jamel Smith, Jevonte Howard, and Kenneth Nwachi each had an interception in the game. Harpers pick went for 30 yards and a touchdown, while Howard returned his for 55 yards.
In addition to his interception Jamel Smith had 11 tackels, 2 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery on the day. Darius Smith and Robert Walls also had fumble recoveries. The Jackets had 1 sack on the afternoon and that was a sack by Dylan Dumarce, who also had 2 tackles for loss.
RCTC's defense, in addition to forcing 7 turnovers, held Vermillion to only 13 first downs, and 1 of 9 third down conversions. Vermillion rushed for 116 yards as compared to the Jackets 338. Vermillion was penalized 10 times for 64 yards on the day.
