Rochester Community and Technical College battled through a challenging but ultimately successful Region Tournament run, overcoming an early setback to capture three consecutive wins and secure a place in the North Plains District Tournament.
The Yellowjackets opened tournament play on May 8 against St. Cloud Technical & Community College, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning behind early production from Sean Postula and Dylan Balazovic. Postula delivered the biggest swing of the inning, driving in three runs, while Balazovic added an RBI to help Rochester take early control. The Yellowjackets collected nine hits in the game, with multiple players—including Derek Encarnacion and Balazovic—finishing with two-hit performances.
However, St. Cloud responded quickly, scoring three runs in the second inning to tie the game before erupting offensively over the next several innings. JT Tirado led the surge with four hits and five RBIs, including a home run, as St. Cloud pulled away for a 15-3 victory. Rochester pitching struggled to contain the momentum, with the opposition capitalizing on walks, hit batters, and defensive miscues. Despite the loss, the Yellowjackets showed flashes of offensive production that would carry forward into the remainder of the tournament.
Facing elimination later that day, Rochester responded in a key matchup against Ridgewater College. In a tightly contested game, the Yellowjackets used timely hitting and aggressive baserunning to claim a 7-6 victory. After Ridgewater scored one run in each of the first three innings, Rochester answered with a strong second and third inning, highlighted by a two-run effort in each frame to build early momentum.
Grayson DeClue paced the offense with two hits and two RBIs while also stealing three bases, setting the tone with his speed and energy. Christian Revilla added a standout performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Conner Cullen contributed two hits, and several Yellowjackets reached base via walks to keep pressure on Ridgewater pitching.
On the mound, Chase Horstman delivered a strong start, working 7.2 innings while striking out six to earn the win. Koda Sanders secured the save, closing the door with three strikeouts in the final inning. Despite committing five errors defensively, Rochester did enough offensively and on the mound to survive and advance.
The Yellowjackets carried that momentum into day two with a dominant performance against Minnesota North College–Hibbing. Rochester's offense exploded for 13 runs on 14 hits in a 13-3 victory. After trading runs in the first inning, the Yellowjackets broke the game open in the second with five runs and added seven more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Aiden Yochim led the attack with three hits and two RBIs, while Connor Mathison and Conner Cullen each added two hits. Postula continued his strong tournament play, driving in three runs, and Balazovic contributed two RBIs. Revilla added another multi-hit game, including a double, while Derek Encarnacion and Matt Dollaghan each drove in runs as part of a balanced offensive effort.
On the mound, Brayden Peterson earned the win, striking out five over three innings. Jack Babcock followed with a solid relief outing, striking out five across three innings as well. The pitching staff combined to limit Hibbing to just three hits, showcasing strong control and efficiency.
With their offense firing on all cylinders, Rochester advanced to face Riverland Community College with a spot in the North Plains District on the line. The Yellowjackets delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, earning a commanding 9-1 victory.
After trailing 1-0 early, Rochester responded with a three-run second inning and continued to build its lead with four runs in the third and two more in the fourth. The offense tallied 13 hits, with multiple players contributing. Christian Revilla led the way again, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Derek Encarnacion added three hits and three RBIs of his own. Sean Postula scored three runs and drove in two, and Gussie Maynard reached base multiple times while scoring twice.
On the mound, Aiden Yochim delivered a complete-game effort, allowing just one run on five hits over seven innings. His efficiency kept Riverland off balance throughout, as the Yellowjackets defense backed him with a clean, error-free performance.
By winning three consecutive elimination games, Rochester demonstrated resilience, depth, and timely execution in all phases. After a difficult opening loss, the Yellowjackets responded by outscoring their final three opponents 29-10, combining strong pitching performances with a balanced and productive offense.
The Region Tournament run highlighted key contributions throughout the lineup, particularly from Revilla, Postula, Encarnacion, and DeClue, while the pitching staff—led by Horstman, Peterson, and Yochim—stepped up in critical moments.
With the Region Tournament secured, Rochester Community and Technical College now advances to the North Plains District on May 15-16, carrying momentum and confidence as they continue their postseason run.
