Fayetteville, IA - The RCTC Yellowjackets, fresh off a season opening sweep of Vermilion Community Coolege at US Bank stadium got their first taste of outdoor baseball on Saturday. The Jackets travelled south to Iowa to take on the JV of Upper Iowa University. RCTC came away with a 2-0 win in the opener and a 9-9 ties in the nightcap, which was called due to darkness.
In the opener, Drew Simmons cruised along through three inings, not allowing a hit while striking out 4 and walking 1 to earn his second win of the season. Three Yellowjacket relievers combined for the final for innings, with Alec Dietl tossing 2 innings and llowing only 1 hit, Brady Nelson pitched the sixth inning, sriking out 2 and allowing a single hit. Sophomore Ryan Roby closed things out, pitching the seventh to earn the save.
The Jackets had five hits in the contest, including a 1- effort and an RBI for Steven Shallcross. Izaak Stevens was 2-3 with a stolen base, while Gabe Sepulveda picked up the other RBI on a sac fly. Jovan Marrero-Soto stole two bases for the Jackets.
In the second game of the twinbill, RCTC's bats took center stage as the Yellowjackets erupted for 9 runs in earning the tie. Stevens once again collected 2 RBI while Sepulveda had a double and an RBI. Cole Outlaw was 1-2 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. As a team the Jackets had 9 hits and walked 5 times in the contest. Soto had two more stolen bases while Trenton Dahnert, Shallcross, Outlaw, and Nelson Bell each had one steal each.
T. Palmer Mickelson went 3 2/3 giving up 2 earned runs (3 total) and allowing 4 hits. Carlos Ramirez, pitched 1 1/3 and Jovanni Gonzalez threw the 6th and 7th inning allowing 1 run.
The Yellowjackets are back in action against Rainy River at US Bank Stadium on Friday, March 19th before playing their first home contest on Saturday, March 20th. Saturday's game will once again be against Rainy River with first pitch schedule for 12:00pm at RBC #4
