Rochester, MN - The RCTC Yellowjackets women's volleyball team had to wait a long time on Thursday to get their NJCAA tournament started, but when they finally stepped on the court for their 4:00pm quarterfinal match they showed why they were the #2 seed in the tournament. Despite a bit of a slow start the Jackets rolled to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-11) sweep of #7 seed Harper College.
In the opening set, Harper, who had downed Queensborough Community College in the opening round earlier in the day, jumped out to early 5-0 and 7-1 leads before RCTC found their rhythm and took control of the set and the match. The Yellowjackets got big matches from all of their top guns as Carrie Rutledge lead the way with 23 kills and a .432 hitting percentage. Hayley Dessner added 11 kills, while Brekkin McCready guided the offense with 36 assists. The Yellowjackets hit .316 as a team in the match.
Defensively the Yellowjackets shutdown Harper throughout, holding them to a .077 hitting percentage and only 28 kills. Libero Kate Bade lead the way with 14 digs, while Dessner joined her in double figures with 10 digs.
RCTC is now set for the National Semifinals on Friday at the Rochester Regional Sports Center. The Jackets will take on Columbus State at 7:00 pm in the second of the two semi-final matches. In the first semi-final, defending champ Owens will take on Brookhaven.
