Glen Ellyn, IL - The RCTC Yellowjacket volleyball team ran their season-opening win streak to eight matches this weekend by going 4-0 at the Chapparal Invitational hosted by the College of Dupage. Perhaps even more impressively, RCTC has yet to drop a set this year going 24-0.
RCTC's four wins came over some top competition including Rock Valley CC, Bryant & Stratton College, Harper College, and Madison College. In the opener against Rock Valley, RCTC got 21 kills from Carrie Rutledge and 17 from Hayley Dessner. Both hitters hit over .400 for the match. Brekkin McCready had 43 assists, while Dessner lead four players in double figures in digs with 16. Rutledge had 11 digs as did Kate Bade, while Gabby Speltz added 10. The Jackets won the match 25-19, 25-21, 25-14 and held Rock Valley to an .042 hitting percentage.
In match two on Friday RCTC was challenged early by Bryant & Stratton, winning the first set 26-24, before closing it out with 25-22, and 25-20 wins in sets two and three. Once again it was Rutledge leading the way, this time with 19 kills and a .350 hitting percentage. McCready lead the offense with 31 assists to go along with 14 digs. Dessner added 14 digs as well to go along with 8 kills. Kate Bade also reached double figures in digs for the second time on the day with 11.
Day two of the tournament was a near repeat of day one as the Jackets started by sweepng Haprer College, 25-19, 25-18, and 25-17, before closing out the tourney with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-17 win over Madison College.
Against Harper, McCready once again directed the offense dishing out 37 assists while adding 13 digs, 2 service aces, and 2 kills. Rutledge and Dessner paced the Yellowjackets with 19 and 11 kills respectively. Dessner hit .417 for the match. Kate Bade lead the way defensively as the sophomore had 17 digs to go along with 2 service aces.
In the final match of the tournament, RCTC got 21 kills from Rutledge and 13 from Dessner. AnnMarie Jalmasco added 7 kills for RCTC. McCready once again lead the way with 43 assists in the match, however it was RCTC's defense that really shined in the match. The Jackets had 76 digs (25.33 per set) in the three sets. Dessner had a career high 23 digs, while Rutledge had 17, McCready added 12, Bade had 11, and Speltz joined her teammates in double figures with 10.
McCready did an amazing job leading the Jacket offense for the weekend, as RCTC hit at a .243 clip.
RCTC plays their home opener on Wednesday, September 4th, as they open MCAC play taking on Western Tech at 6:30 in the Sports Center. They will then play host to their own RCTC Yellowjacket Invitational Friday and Saturday, September 6th and 7th.
