Des Moines, IA - The RCTC Yellowjacket Volleyball team stepped out of conference play and into NJCAA DII volleyball for a weekend. Despite losing all four matches the Jackets represented the DIII schools well, taking sets off of all four teams they played on the weekend.
RCTC opened the weekend taking on Kirkwood Community College (#12 ranked DII) at 6:00 on Friday night. The Jackets struggled early dropping sets one and two by the scores of 25-19 and 25-14, before rebounding with a 25-20 thrid set win. Kirkwood closed out the match winning set four 25-10. RCTC was lead by Carrie Rutledge's 13 kills and Haliey Bahr's 11. Brekkin McCready had 35 assists while Katlyn Bade lead the way with 8 digs.
Match two of the day was another tough match for the Jackets as they took on DII #5 ranked Highland Community College out of Kansas. This time around the Jackets split the first two sets, before dropping sets three and four to fall 3-1. Hailey Bahr lead the Jackets with 8 kills as the Jacket offense was stuck in neutral, hitting .000 for the match...The Jacket defense kept RCTC competitive as they tallied 60 digs and 8 blocks. Three players tallied double figure digs as Bade and McCready had 14, while Alexis Dudycha chipped in 11.
Day two started with a tightly contested match against DII Metropolitan Community College. The Yellowjackets dropped the first two sets, 26-24 and 27-25 before controlling set three 25-16. In a hard fought 4th set RCTC fell again by the score of 27-25. The RCTC offense was started clicking once again in the match as three Jackets found their way into double figures in kills. Rutledge hammered out 19, while Bahr added 13. Mariah Steinbach chipped in 10 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Brekkin McCready had 52 assists and 12 digs in the match. Joining McCready in double figures in digs were; Bade (18), Heidi Wolf (12), and Rutledge (10). Alexis Dudycha barely missed making it five in double figures as she added 9 digs on the match.
The final match of the tournament pitted RCTC against host and 19th ranked Des Moines Area Community College. In a repeat of the first three matches of the tournament RCTC fell by the score of 3-1. The Jackets found the most success offensively in the match out of the middle, as Steinbach had 9 kills and hit .304, while middle hitting partner AnnMarie Jalmasco added 6 kills and a .278 hitting percentage. McCready added 33 assists and Bade lead the Jackets with 18 digs.
RCTC is back in action returning to MCAC play this week taking on Anoka-Ramsey on Wednesday and St. Cloud Technical and Community College on Friday. Both matches are on the road with first serve scheduled for 6:30pm
