Rochester Community and Technical College Yellowjackets have solidified themselves as one of the top programs in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference and National Junior College Athletic Association for the 2019-2020 season. RCTC holds a 6-1 dual record, placing second at the United States Marine Corps / National Wrestling Coaches Association Multi-Division National Dual Championships in the NJCAA bracket and became MCAC Conference champions for the eighth consecutive year.
The Yellowjackets took 14 wrestlers down to Louisville, Kentucky in early December, where they were seeded third in the NJCAA bracket. RCTC was dealt Rowan College at Gloucester County of New Jersey first round of the tournament, defeating the Roadrunners 25-16. Six freshmen Minnesotans tallied wins for the Yellowjackets; Parker Dobrocky of Anoka (133lbs. / Tech fall), Alex Lloyd of Shakopee (157lbs. / Decision), Seth Brossard of Kenyon-Wanamingo (165lbs. / Fall), Gavin Christoffersen of South St. Paul (184lbs. / Decision), Richie Hammonds of Anoka (197lbs. / Decision), and John Noll of Centennial (HWT / Fall).
Semifinal round, the Yellowjackets defeated Harper College of Illinois, 31-16. Scoring wins over the Hawks was; Francis Fuenffinger of Hibbing (125lbs. / Fall), Parker Dobrocky (133lbs. / Overtime Decision), Seth Brossard (165lbs. / Fall), Jeremiah Colon of Lake Crystal-Welcome Memorial (174lbs. / Major Decision), Gavin Christoffersen (184lbs. / Fall), and John Noll of Centennial (HWT / Fall).
Rochester lost a nail biter in the national finals to Nassau Community College of New York, 23-15. The Yellowjackets won matches with Shakopee standouts Brandon Kidd (149lbs. / Decision) and Alex Lloyd (157lbs / Decision), as well as Jeremiah Colon (174lbs. / Decision), and Richie Hammonds of Anoka (197lbs. / Fall).
Four days later, the Rochester Regional Sports Center on the campus of RCTC played host to the 2020 MCAC Conference Dual Championships, where the Yellowjackets went 4-0 against Itasca, Minnesota West, Ridgewater, and Northland. Rochester dominated the conference on their home mat, going 40-0 in individual matches. RCTC defeated Ridgewater 60-0, Minnesota West 59-0, Itasca 54-0, and Northland 55-0.
Bonus points were the focus for the Yellowjackets. Seth Brossard (165lbs.) led the way for the Yellowjackets, recording four falls. Matt Frost of New York Mills (141lbs.) of New York Mills and Jeremiah Colon (174lbs.) both earned two falls and one tech fall a piece. Francis Fuenffinger (125lbs.), Richie Hammonds (197lbs.), and John Noll (HWT) tallied two falls each. At 157lbs. Noah Parish of Mankato East scored a fall and tech fall, and Alex Lloyd won a match by decision. Auston Hall (141lbs.) from Greenville, South Carolina and Gavin Christoffersen (184lbs.) both earned a fall and decision victory, and Parker Dobrocky (133lbs.) won a match by fall.
The Yellowjackets dual season started and finished in the early weeks of December. Though the dual season was short, they RCTC staff liked what they saw from the team in the dual discipline. "We are traditionally not a dual team program. The foundation of our schedule is based on "Open" tournaments, because it gives everyone in the program an opportunity to compete. However, these duals were a great opportunity for our crew to come together as a team and support one another," said coach Randy Rager.
The Yellowjackets compete next at the MCAC/North District National Qualifier on Sunday February 23rd in Grand Rapids, MN at Itasca Community and Technical College.
