The Rochester Community and Technical College Yellowjackets competed in the NJCAA National Tournament this past weekend in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Leading the Jackets was Sophomore Mason Hawkins at 197 pounds. Hawkins narrowly lost his first match and was forced to battle his way back through the consolation bracket to claim fifth place.  "Mason isn't the biggest guy at 197, but he is disciplined, conditioned, strong, and has a game plan going into each match. This was the best that I have seen him wrestle and he has definitely earned his spot on the podium," said Coach Randy Rager.

The Yellowjackets were the returning National Champs from 2017 and had nine qualifiers going into the tournament.  "I thought we had a great shot at a repeat championship, but we just didn't get it done," said Rager.  We had some guys hurt going in, but it's the national championship and to win it you have to overcome that adversity." The team placed third among non-scholarship schools.

Coach Randy Rager was named the 2018 NJCAA Wrestling Coaches Association "Man of the Year". This award is chosen by the coaches and presented to one individual each year for their service and leadership to the sport of wrestling.
