RCTC women drop two tight games to start New Year

Coon Rapids, MN - The RCTC Yellowjackets women's basketball team kicked off the New Year at the same site they ended 2018, Anoka-Ramsey CC.  Playing their 3rd and 4th game of the season at Anoka the Jackets fell to St. Catherine's University JV 68-62 and to Hibbing by the score of 81-66.

In the opener against St. Kate's, it was Alyssa Whitson leading the charge for the Jackets, as the fresman poured in 19 points on 8-13 shooting. Joining Whitson in double figures were Olivia Matti with 14 and Grace Riley with 12.  In a tightly contested game throughout it was the Wildcats who fought their way to a 28-26 lead at halftime, with each team winning one period in the opening half.  The second half also was tight throughout as St. Kate's outscore the Jackets 20-18 in both the 3rd and 4th quarter. The Jackets struggled shooting all night, hitting on just over 31% of their field goal attempts, while St. Catherine's hit at a 53% clip. RCTC's defense kept them in the contest as they forced 21 Wildcat turnovers on the night.

Game two was a rematch of a game back on December 7th against Hibbing Community College.  In that game, the Cardinals cruised to a 45 point win  (98-53).  This game was a different story as RCTC outscored Hibbing 59-52 in the final 3 periods.  Unfotunately for the Yellowjackets period one counted in the final result, and it was in this period that Hibbing outscored RCTC 29-7, leading to the final score.

It was Olivia Matti who took the lead offensively for the Yellowjackets dropping in 23 points on 8-17 shooting.  Grace Riley was the only other Jacket in double figures as the sophomore guard scored 19 points.  RCTC shot 36.5% from the floor and hit on 14-16 free throws (87.5%) on the night.

RCTC kicks off conference play at home this Saturday (January 12th) with a 1:00 start against St. Cloud Community and Technical College.
