Rochester, MN - Despite the cold temperatures and snow on the ground the RCTC softball season is now in full swing. The Jackets hosted the RCTC Early Bird Invitational in the dome this past weekend with 15 games being played over 18 hours.
RCTC had a very good start to the year as they went 2-1 in their three contests. The Jackets opened the season with a 5-2 win over the College of Lake County, and then followed that up with a 5-4 loss to Clarke College's JV team. RCTC concluded the tournament with a convincing 14-6 win over Gogebic Community College.
In game one, Emma Bartholomew went the distance, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, while walking 5 and striking out 3. RCTC got 2 hits each from Makenzie Swanson-Larson, Mattie Hellerud, and Bartholomew. Swanson-Larson picked up 2 RBI, while Haylee Sawyer, Amanda Johnson, and Bartholomew each picked up 1.
In the game two loss to Clarke, Mattie Hellerud lead the way going 3-4 with a monster homerun, and 2 doubles. She picked up a pair of RBI and scored twice. Caitlyn Sowieja also had two hits in the game for the Jackets. Bartholomew took the loss, giving up 5 runs on 9 hits while striking out 7.
RCTC bounced back in a big way in the final game of the tournament as the Jackets pounded out 17 hits enroute to the 14-6 win. Once again it was Hellerud leading the way as she went 3-5 with another homerun, 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. Hailee Welsh was a perfect 4-4 at the plate, while Amber Chapel and Haylee Sawyer each had two hits.
For the weekend, Hellerud was 8-13 (.615) with 4 RBI, 7 runs scored, and 3 homeruns. Emma Bartholomew hit .417, while Hailee Welsh and Amanda Johnson each hit .333 for the weekend. The Jackets hit .327 for the weekend with 7 extra base hits in their 3 games. Bartholomew threw 19 innings to go 2-1and striking out 15.
The Yellowjackets are now getting ready for their Spring Break trip so Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where they will play 8 games between March 7 and 14th.
