Rochester, MN - The RCTC Yellowjackets faced off against Ridgewater on Monday night in a critical series for both teams post season hopes, and when the dust settled both teams escaped with a win and hopes of a Regional Tournament berth still in place.
Game one proved to be a 2 1/2 hour slugfest as the teams erupted for a combined 33 runs on 46 hits. The game was full of drams and lead changes and could not be settled in 7 innings as Ridgewater outlasted the Jackets 17-16 in 8 innings. RCTC got off to a hot start scoring four in the first, only to be answered by seven Ridgewater runs in the 2nd. The Jackets then scored two in the 2nd, five in the 3rd, and two in the 4th to take a 13-9 lead. Ridgewater added one in the 5th, five in the 6th and one in the 7th to lead 16-13 heading into the final frame. In the bottom of the 7th RCTC shortstop Abby Bauer hit a two run homerun to tie the game and send it to extra innings. In the top of the 8th Ridgewater leadoff batter Autumn Slowiak beat out a bunt, stole second and scored on a single to give Ridgwater the win.
Bauer was 4-5 with a homerun, a double, 5 RBI, and 2 runs scored for RCTC. Joining the hit parade were Cassie Voth (3-5) 3 runs scored, Mattie Hellerud (3-5) an RBI and 3 runs scored, Amber Chapel (3-5) a triple, a double, an RBI and 2 runs scored, and Katie Pearson (3-5) 2 runs scored.
As the two teams took the field for game two it appeared the offense was used up in the the first game. Both teams pitchers had the upper hand through most of the game. Ridgewater got off to an early start scoring two in the first against RCTC starter Hailey Stock, but could only must one additional run the rest of the way. RCTC on the other hand couldn't get anything going early as they were shutout through 4 innings. They managed a single run in the bottom of the 5th to make the score 2-1 Ridgewater, before Ridgwewater answered with one of the their own in the top of the 6th. RCTC's heroics happened in the bottom of the 6th as they erupted for four runs to seal the 5-3 win. In the crucial 6th inning, Makenzie Swanson-Larson and Katie Pearson both got on board to start the inning, then with runners on second and third Amanda Johnson hit a line drive single to right scoring 2 to tie the game. After lead-off hitter Cassie Voth got on board, it was catche Abi Folkert's turn as she tripled to the fence two score both Johnson and Voth.
For the game, Voth was 3-4 with a run scored, Folkert was 1-4 with a triple and 2 RBI, Mattie Hellerud was 1-4 with a triple, Johnson was 1-4 with 2 RBI and Amber Chapel was 2-3 with a run scored. Haliee Stock went the distance for RCTC going 7 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on while scattering 5 hits.
The Yellowjackets are back in action tonight (May 7th) travelling to Riverland for a Southern Division double header.
