The RCTC women's softball team has gotten off to a solid start this year. The Yellowjackets are 3-3 on the young season and are poised for a run at the regional tournament in May. Despite the snowy and cold winter weather the Jackets have played 6 contests (all in a dome), over the course of two early season tournaments.
RCTC hosted the Early Bird Invitational by in February before playing in the MN Classic in Rosemount this past SUnday, March 31st. In the Early Bird tourney RCTC fell 11-0 to Simpson College in the opener before down MCAC rival Riverland 15-7 and 1-0. Against Simpson, RCTC's lone hit came off the bat of Makenzie Swanson-Larson. In the double header against Riverland the Jacket bats got rolling as they pounded out 10 hits including 3 doubles and 4 triples on the day. Abi Folkert had two doubles while Hailee Stock added two triples. Folkert and Hayley Baumann were each scored 3 runs on the day. Katie Pearson, Swanson-Larson, FOlkert, and Cassie Voth each added 2 hits.
In the MN Classic RCTC downed Rainy River 12-4, pounding out 12 hits. Cassie Voth led the way going 3-4 with 3 runs scored. Amber Chapel was 2-4 for the game. Abby Bauer and Hailee Stock each add 2 RBI's while Voth and hellerud each had a double. Getting the win for RCTC was Hailee Stock who threw all 5 innings allowing 4 hits while striking out 5.
Next up for the Jackets was Central Lakes CC. The Raiders were able to silence the Jacket offense downing RCTC 3-0 in a tightly played contest. In the final game of the day it took extra innings for the Jackets to fall to Northland CC 12-8 in 8 innings. Folkert had 3 hits while Matti Hellerud was 4-5 with 4 RBI's and her first Collegiate homerun. Voth, Hellerud, and Folkert each added a double in the contest.
RCTC is back in action this coming weekend as they host the MCAC Crossover in the dome on Friday and Saturday (April 5th and 6th). RCTC plays at 10:00 and 12:00 on Friday and then at 10:00 and 4:00 on Saturday.
NEXT WEEK, on Tuesday, April 9th the Jackets will play host (weather permitting) to Riverland CC in the first games played on the new RCTC softball field at the complex.
