Virginia, MN - The RCTC football team got off to a slow start in the first quarter of their season opener versus Mesabi Range as the Jackets trailed 21-0 after one. From there the two teams played even football withthe jackets gaining more yards that the Norseman, unfotunately the first quarter hole proved to be too much as the Jackets fell 61-31.
RCTC scored twice in the second quarter, the first on a 31 yard pass from Cameron Green to Dylan VanBoxel, and the second on a 6 yard touchdown run fromn Israel Lozoya. The third quarter was highlighted by a 78 yard strike from Jacob Guidry to Lozoya, and the fourth included another touchdown run by Lozoya as well as a 31 yard touchdown pass to Juan Cerda-Bautista from Cody Hogan.
The Jackets had 479 yards of total offense compared to 415 for the Norsemen. Unfotunately for the Jackets they turned the ball over 5 teams in the game. Jacket offensive leaders included Greg Hoard with 36 yards rushing on 2 carries. while Lozoya had 78 yards receving on his one catch, Cameorn Green had 5 catches for 62 yeards, Peter Osman had 4 for 54 yards, while Severyn Foster added 3 for 33 yards.
Defensively, Prentiss Sayeweh had 5 tackles and 2 sacks while Larry Lecount had 6 tackles to lead the Jackets. Diego Muniz picked up the 3rd sack in the game for RCTC.
Mesabi was lead by Mario Johnson who had 4 catches for 128 yards and 3 touchdowns, While Hassa Biggus rushed for 90 yards and a score and Myles Ratliff added two touchdowns.
RCTC is back on the road once again next weekend heading to Bottineau, North Dakota for a match-up against the Lumberjacks with kickoff scheduled for noon. Both team will enter the game at 0-1 as DCB fell to Central Lakes 12-0 on Saturday.
