Yellowjackets slotted 3rd in Eastern Division Pre-season poll

MCAC Offices - Football Preview

With the start of the 2018 Minnesota College Athletic Conference football season just around the corner, Conference coaches took time recently to make their predictions for the upcoming fall campaign.  Read on for more information regarding the MCAC Eastern Division football teams in 2018.

In 2017, Central Lakes College and Mesabi Range College both battled through their MCAC schedules, working through personnel changes and injuries throughout the course of the season.  While the Raiders captured the 2017 Division regular season hardware,  Mesabi Range College, led by new coach Tom Inforzato, played their way to the MCAC State Championship game, where they fell to Northland CTC, 68-35.   The Norse collected big playoff wins on the road, traveling to Rochester to win by a 30-19 scoreline and outlasting Dakota College-Bottineau, 48-43 in a snowy semi-final contest in North Dakota.

This fall, Division coaches offered their thoughts as to how teams would fare in 2018:  #1 Central Lakes College; #2 Mesabi Range College; #3 Rochester Community & Technical College; #4 Itasca Community College; #5 Vermilion Community College; #6 Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College.

Derrick Hintz returns to the RCTCsidelines as the program's head coach in 2018, after serving as the defensive coordinator in 2017.  Hintz is familiar to the Rochester community, as he was also the Yellowjacket head coach for the 2011-12 academic year and has over 40 seasons of coaching experience in football, wrestling and track/field in the area.

Local standout Cazz Martin had a strong 2017 season and Rochesterwill be looking for him to pace the offense once again in 2018.  NJCAA All-America linebacker Brendan Percehas moved on to NCAA Division I Bowling Green State University, but RCTC hopes Jamel Smith (LB, St. Louis, MO) and Robert Brown (DL, Eden Prairie) will more than make up for his absence.

Rochester will host pre-season MCAC favorite and 2017 State Champion Northland CTC on Saturday, September 1.  The Yellowjackets will begin Eastern Division play on September 15 when they travel to Duluth to take on Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College.
