RCTC splits pair of weekend series

Rochester, MN - The RCTC baseball team split a pair of weekend double headers. falling twice to Anoka Ramsey (4-5 and 2-7) before sweeping MN West (17-1 and 5-0).  The 2-2 weekend pushed the Yellowjackets to 8-4 in the MCAC southern division.

In the first of two games against Anoka, it was the Rams who got on the board early against starter Ben Strassman as the pushed across 2 runs in the first.  Strassman settled in and went 5 2/3 allowing 4 runs (only 2 earned) while striking out 3.  The Jackets took their first lead of the game in the 6th putting up 3 runs in the frame to take a 4-3 lead.  RCTC's bullpen could close things out as the allowed Anoka 1 run each in the bottom of the 6th and 7th for the final score.  RCTC got the first game of a big weekend by Matt Rhodes as he had a homerun, a double, 3 RBI and a runscored in the loss.

Game two against the Rams saw RCTC jump out early getting 2 runs in the first.  From their it was all Anoka as they scored 2 in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd, 3, in the 4th, and another 1 run in the 5th.  Brad Barkema was 2-3 with an RBI, while Ethan Hurn picked up 2 hits.  Zach Wolter and Rhodes had the only other Jacket hits as they each singled and were 1-3.

Sunday proved to be a new day for the Jackets as their bats erupted for 22 runs in the double header against MN West.  In game one Jeremiah Van De Steeg continued his fantastic season as the sophomkore went 5 innings allowing only 1 run on 2 hits.  RCTC gave Van De Steeg all the offense he would need as they scored 5 runs in the 2nd inning followed by 6 each in the 3rd and 4th.  Matt Rhodes was 1-2 with a double and 3 RBI.  Sanders Napoles had two doubles and  2 runs scored, while Ethan Hurn picked up 2 hits, 3 rBI and 3 runs scored.  Brad Barkema also added 3 RBI in the game.

Game two featured another pitching gem, this time by sophomore Ethan Hurn.  Hurn went the distance allowing only 3 hits and striking out a career high 12 in earning the shuout victory.  Brad Barkema had an outstanding game at the plate as the Yellowjacket catcher went 2-3 with a homerun, 3 RBI and a run scored.  Matt Rhodes concluded his outstanding weekend going 1-1 with a double, and RBI, and a run scored.  Lucas Fredin, Jorge Reyes, and Carlos Dominguez all added doubles in the game.

RCTC next hosts Riverland on THURSDAY, May 9th.  The game was originally schedule for Wednesday the8th but has been postponed due to incoming weather on Wednesday.  The game marks the final home game for RCTC's sophomores...
